Drinking Soda Leads to Pancreatic Cancer or Does It?

A new study in Singapore found a correlation between people who drank two or more sodas a week and development of pancreatic cancer. However, there needs to be further research to prove that there is a definite link between soda and this deadly form of cancer.

Consider This Before You Stop Drinking Soda

One of the problems with the study is that the participants’ entire diet was not assessed when linking to their risk of pancreatic cancer. Many people who drink sodas regularly also eat unhealthy diets, which could also be a factor in developing this type of cancer.

Another possible route for further research in this is examining exactly what is in soda that makes someone much more susceptible to developing pancreatic cancer. The researchers suggest that it could be the sugar since tumor cells use glucose. However, again, there is no definite link between sugar and cancer development.

Genetics also needs to be considered. People who have a genetic marker for pancreatic cancer are at a higher risk of developing it. While environmental factors may contribute to its onset, it is unclear how big of a role it plays in pancreatic cancer.

Better Choices Are Always Better For You

While soda may or may not contribute to pancreatic cancer, it is important to realize that a can of soda has an unhealthy amount of sugar. Overtime, not only will it add pounds, but it may also contribute to other medical problems. So consider this the next time you reach for that can of Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper etc. Making better food and drink choices will save your health in one way or another.
